What Each Test Type Actually Tells You
Understanding what you're getting — and what you're not getting — is crucial before spending money on any test:
- Hormone panels (Modern Fertility, Everlywell) give you a single snapshot of your hormone levels. AMH estimates your remaining egg supply (ovarian reserve). FSH and LH indicate how hard your body is working to ovulate. But hormones fluctuate — one abnormal reading doesn't mean you're infertile, and one normal reading doesn't guarantee you're not.
- OPKs (Clearblue, Easy@Home) tell you when you're about to ovulate so you can time intercourse. They don't tell you whether your eggs are good quality, whether your tubes are open, or whether your uterine lining is ready for implantation.
- Ovulation confirmation (Proov) tells you whether ovulation actually occurred and whether progesterone levels are adequate to support a pregnancy. This is information most other at-home tests don't provide.
- Sperm tests (YO, Legacy) measure the quantity and quality of sperm. But they can't detect genetic issues, antibody problems, or DNA fragmentation (unless you specifically pay for the advanced Legacy panel).
If you're over 38, have known conditions like endometriosis or PCOS, have had recurrent miscarriages, or have been trying for more than a year — go directly to a reproductive endocrinologist. At-home tests won't tell you enough, and the time spent on screening could delay treatment you actually need.
