Sperm reach the cervical mucus within seconds of ejaculation. The leakage you see after sex is excess seminal fluid, not the sperm that matter. What the Science Says
One well-known study (IUI, not intercourse) found a benefit to lying still for 15 minutes after insemination. This is frequently cited as evidence for lying down after sex, but the situations are different — IUI delivers a small, concentrated volume directly into the uterus, while natural intercourse deposits a larger volume in the vagina with the cervix as a barrier.
No study on natural intercourse has shown a statistically significant difference in pregnancy rates based on what a woman does with her body after sex.
Why Leakage Is Not a Problem
After sex, semen leaks from the vagina. This alarms many TTC couples. Here's why it shouldn't:
- The fastest sperm enter the cervical mucus within seconds of ejaculation
- Within 5 minutes, millions of sperm have already passed through the cervix
- The leaking fluid is seminal plasma — the liquid carrier. The sperm that matter are already in the cervical crypts or migrating through the uterus.
- You could lose 95% of the ejaculate volume and still have more than enough sperm in the cervix for conception

Imagine pouring water through a coffee filter. The water (seminal plasma) passes through quickly, but the grounds (sperm) catch in the filter (cervical mucus). Even if you tip the cup and some water drains back out, the grounds are already trapped. That's essentially what's happening — the cervical mucus has already captured the important cells.
What You Can Do (If You Want)
If lying still for 10–15 minutes after sex gives you peace of mind, do it. It costs nothing, and there's a plausible (though unproven) mechanism for marginal benefit. But don't lie there for an hour, don't do handstands, and don't panic if you need to get up to use the bathroom immediately after.
