How Often Should You Have Sex When Trying to Conceive?

How often to have sex to maximize conception chances: the every-day vs every-other-day debate, sperm replenishment rates, fertile window timing, and why more is not always better.

💡 Bottom Line Up Front

Have sex every 1–2 days during your fertile window (the 5 days before ovulation and ovulation day). Daily sex does not significantly deplete sperm reserves in most men, but every-other-day works just as well and is more sustainable. Outside the fertile window, frequency doesn't matter for conception — but having sex 2–3 times per week keeps sperm fresh and your relationship healthy.

The Data: Daily vs. Every Other Day

Every other day33%ASRM Practice Committee, 2021

The difference between daily and every-other-day is small (37% vs 33%) and not statistically significant in most studies. Either approach works. The much bigger drop is from every-other-day to once weekly — proving that frequency within the fertile window matters, but daily sex isn't necessary.

Sperm Replenishment: How Fast Does the Tank Refill?

After ejaculation, it takes approximately 24–36 hours for sperm stores to replenish to near-full levels. After 5+ days of abstinence, sperm volume increases but quality actually decreases because older, DNA-damaged sperm accumulate in the epididymis.

⚠ The abstinence trap

Some couples think “saving up” sperm by avoiding ejaculation will increase their chances. The opposite is true for extended periods. Sperm stored for more than 5 days have higher rates of DNA fragmentation and lower motility. The optimal range for sperm quality is ejaculation every 2–3 days. If you're timing sex around ovulation, don't abstain for more than 3–4 days before the fertile window begins.

The Practical Strategy

  1. Days 1–7 of cycle: No conception pressure. Have sex if you want to, don't if you don't. Maintain 2–3x/week baseline to keep sperm fresh.
  2. Days 8–10 (approaching fertile window): Start having sex every 1–2 days. This pre-loads sperm into the cervical crypts.
  3. Days 11–16 (fertile window for average cycle): Have sex every day or every other day. If using OPKs, continue for 2 days after your positive test.
  4. Days 17–28: The two-week wait. Frequency doesn't affect conception. Have sex for fun, not duty.

The “Sex on Demand” Problem

The biggest threat to TTC sex is not frequency — it's the psychological toll. When sex becomes a scheduled task, many couples experience:
